How the hell do you… Do a back flip?

Back flip is one of the most ridiculously dangerous biking feats you can perform. If you want to do a back flip let me tell you beforehand, it’s a trick and quite risky business. I have seen people trying it and landing up head first on the ground. So unless you master the tricks you should never try it as it involves flying off a ramp and then flipping the bike back over your head and bringing it down wheels first but if you are able to execute it perfectly then it will bring you unparalleled joy and ecstasy. It’s like an all or nothing battle but with our guidelines, you should be able to pull it off with ease.

It is the initial technique on the ramp which is the most important part of the execution. Once you get your take-off right you are likely to perform the back flip correctly but if it goes wrong then no adjustment can save you.

So here we have divided the whole process into 5 steps to help you, perfect, your back flip:

Step 1: Firstly for practice, you need a take-off ramp covered with expanded mesh to get the required grip. When practicing on the ramps keep increasing the distance between the ramp and the pit gradually and try to carry out the stunt on ramps which are less steep. This will help you to master the rotation and you know the exact torque and acceleration which are required. With practice, you will eventually be able to do back flips at any angle and distance.

Step 2: The toughest part is maintaining your body position. When you jump on your bike you may lay your weight on the front but during a back flip you have to lean back and look at the sky. In this step what you need more than technique is courage and loads of it. There are small steps which if done with precision people can learn the tricks of the trade. Initially, you should practice on ramps that lead into pits filled with foam blocks and try it on bicycles instead of motorcycles since it is easier to pull off the stunt.

Step 3: Put your bike in the second gear or pull your clutch with your left hand and place your left foot under the lever to push your bike upward. Once you are at the ramp increase your speed gradually and use your left hand to bring back your clutch few times and increase the acceleration with your right hand.  By the time you are ready to be vertical, the rpm needs to be between 8000-9000. Before you take off the ramp do the process once again to get the required acceleration to make the jump.

Step 4: Once the front wheels have left the ramp to keep the throttle open and give the bars a little tug back. Keep the power on so that the rear wheels have enough momentum to perform the back flip. Now the real fun begins. Once you are in the air you can rev up your bike a little to increase the rotation. You need to keep your arms straight and it’s about how well you balance your upper body and weight. Now you will know how much to rotate as it is driven by instincts.  If you think too much about it you will mess it up and it might be extremely dangerous.

If you can’t trust your guts or over think then you should rather stay away from back flip. Just close your eyes since keeping it open may make you lean forward and thereby kill the momentum.

Step 5: When you are going upside down do not feel scared and jump off your bike as ultimately it will fall on you and cause injuries. Instead stay on your bike for as long as possible and tilt your head back so that you can see the spot of your landing. Hold the bars close to your chest as much as you can and once the rotation is completed let go of the gas to land on your wheels. Ensure that your bike isn’t too big or heavy for you as the trick becomes a lot harder.
