North west 200

It is an annual road race held in Northern Ireland on the streets between Portstewart, Coleraine, and Portrush. The circuit is like a triangle and this race is famous for its racers reaching very high speeds of over 200 mph. Surprisingly though the number of accidents has been relatively low. There have been only 15 accidents till date 3 of which occurred in a single race in 1979. There is little concern for safety as most street signs are missing.

Dakar:

It is a race held every year in South America. The first event was held in 1979. Pre 2008 the race was held from Paris to Dakar in Senegal. Due to increasing terrorist threats and dangerous roads which traversed through the African desert the race had to be shifted to South America. From 2009 it is held in Argentina and Chile. The event is held for a period of two weeks and racers travel over thousands of kilometers in a day. There have been more than 60 fatalities in the history of this event.

Isle of Man:

It is the oldest, most famous race and perhaps the most daunting. It is held on the small island between Ireland and England. Even statistically speaking it is the most dangerous as the Snake fell Mountain Course which covers over 38 miles has killed over 40 riders. There are six different events and such is the craze that the island almost gets paralyzed. The country roads are closed for the bikers. The race is extremely beneficial for the local economy as well. Different categories of events include electric motorcycles, sidecar racing, and engine sized motorbikes. The route is through towns and villages and across the countryside. Bikers often race at speeds as high as 130 mph. The high number of fatalities and dangers has not deterred bikers though and perhaps because of the high-risk factor, the Isle of Man seems to have retained its charm.

Baja 1000:

It is held in Mexico’s Baja California peninsula every year from 1967. There are different classes of the vehicle types. The length of the race is between 600 and 1000 miles. The terrain is through deserts and spectator booby trapping sections make the tracks even more dangerous. Last year a rider died after hitting an animal on course.

Pike’s peak:

It involves a mountain climb in Colorado. A racer is expected to climb up the 12.42-mile track. The terrain is full of turns which rise up to 1440m. Carlin Dunne currently holds the record for completing the course in an impressive record time of 9min 52 sec at a speed of 121.4 kph. The course is extremely dangerous as sections of the course don’t have barriers and any mistake will be life-threatening. This makes the race extremely appealing to the spectators. Given the dangerous nature of the track, it comes as a surprise that only two people have died since the inception of the race in 1916.

King of the hammers:

It is a race held annually in the United States of America. The terrain is mostly made of desert with rocks around. Riding on such roads is extremely arduous. It started with just one race but has now expanded to 5 races. It is one of the few races to be broadcast live.
